Buy Now, Pay Later: The Cost You Don’t See at Checkout

There was a time when borrowing money felt like a big decision. You’d sit down with someone, ask questions, think through your options, and decide what made the most sense for your budget. Today, borrowing often looks very different. You’re shopping online, you find something you need, and before you know it there’s a button inviting you to split the purchase into four easy payments. It takes seconds, and you barely have to think about it.

Honestly, that’s exactly why Buy Now, Pay Later has become so popular.

For many people, it’s not about spending irresponsibly. It’s about making life work. Maybe your washing machine quit. Maybe school clothes couldn’t wait until next payday. Maybe groceries cost more than you expected this month. When you’re trying to balance real life with a real budget, having the option to spread out a payment can feel like a lifeline.

At United Community, we understand that because we’ve all been there in one way or another. We listen. We don’t judge.

What we do want to talk about is something that doesn’t always become obvious until weeks or months later. Buy Now, Pay Later is designed to make one purchase feel manageable, but it can quietly make your overall financial life more complicated. One payment turns into three. Three become six. Before long, your checking account has money coming out on different days for different purchases from different companies. None of the payments seem very large on their own, yet together they begin competing for the same paycheck.

That experience is becoming increasingly common. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, more than 60% of Buy Now, Pay Later users have multiple loans open at the same time, and about one in three uses more than one provider. The challenge isn’t necessarily that people are borrowing too much. It’s that they’re trying to keep up with several different repayment schedules at once, making it much easier for something to slip through the cracks.

And when that happens, the consequences can be bigger than many people realize. Depending on the provider, a missed payment can result in late fees, suspension of your account, collection activity, or even an impact on your credit history. What started as a convenient way to buy a pair of shoes or replace a broken appliance can end up creating stress that lasts far longer than the purchase itself.

There’s another side to this that often gets overlooked. Buy Now, Pay Later changes the way we think about spending. A $400 purchase doesn’t feel like $400 when it’s presented as four payments of $100. The price hasn’t changed, but the way our brains process it has. That’s one reason retailers have embraced these programs so enthusiastically. Research consistently shows that shoppers are more likely to complete a purchase—and often spend more—when the immediate cost feels smaller.

None of this means Buy Now, Pay Later is inherently bad. Like many financial tools, it has its place. Used thoughtfully and sparingly, it can help someone manage an unexpected expense. The problem begins when convenience replaces planning, or when multiple small obligations slowly crowd out room in the monthly budget.

That’s why we encourage our members to ask a different question before clicking that button. Instead of asking, “Can I split this into four payments?” ask, “What’s the best way to pay for this?” Sometimes the answer may still be Buy Now, Pay Later. But sometimes a personal loan with one predictable payment, a credit card with the right features, or simply waiting a little longer will leave you in a much stronger financial position.

That’s where a credit union is different.

Our job isn’t to convince you to borrow money from us instead of someone else. Our job is to help you make financial decisions that reduce stress instead of creating more of it. Sometimes that means recommending one of our products. Sometimes it means helping you build a plan. Sometimes it simply means having an honest conversation before you make a decision.

If you’re considering Buy Now, Pay Later for your next purchase, we’d love the opportunity to talk first. We may confirm that it’s the right choice. Or we may help you discover an option that’s simpler, less expensive, and easier to fit into your budget.

Either way, you’ll leave the conversation with something far more valuable than another payment plan.

You’ll leave with confidence.

And that’s what we’re here to help you build.
